Yesterday I was helping my son learn how to duck under waves at the beach. People who haven’t grown up near the sea, both kids and adults, often try to power through face-up. If you watch the original Karate Kid movie, that’s exactly what they do. Adults might be different for other reasons, but with children it comes down to fear. They know a powerful wave is coming and will hit them hard, so why lie flat and get crushed? Eventually, with time and some coaxing, they try it out and realize that doing it right lets the force of the water pass over them without harm. Watching that shift happen is truly impressive, and I believe it’s one of those life skills that stretch far beyond just handling ocean waves. It’s about beating fear, giving new things a go, and realizing that rushing in headfirst isn’t always the wisest approach to challenges.
Later on, thinking back on this made me consider what lessons chastity has been offering me. One clear takeaway is how mistaken we can be even about our strongest beliefs. A year ago now, if you asked what was wrong with my marriage, I’d say my wife is frigid, which leaves me frustrated and annoyed. That’s when 75% of my sex life consisted of my hand and a screen because of her, and I resented that fact. Clearly, I had it backward: what has brought me joy is a big drop in orgasms and almost zero actual intercourse. It makes me question how valid some of my other beliefs are too. What lessons have you all picked up from chastity?
