How do you stop a long distance dynamic from quietly fading?

My keyholder and I are online only, and will be for the foreseeable future. It started intense and now it is drifting into the odd message when one of us remembers.

I do not want it to quietly die, but I also do not know how you keep an online dynamic feeling like a real thing rather than a chat we occasionally return to. For those doing this at distance, what keeps it active week to week? Is it structure, scheduled check-ins, or something else I am missing?

Structure is what saved ours. Set check-in times you both actually keep, even short ones, and the dynamic stops relying on mood or memory. A quick daily message at a fixed time did more for us than any big weekend session. Rhythm is the whole game online.
