I own a Chinese A271 model. It works well overall, but there are two issues I’ve noticed. First, the 50mm ring tends to let my balls escape regularly, whereas the 45mm version feels a little too snug. Second, there are metal bands inside the tube that are narrower than the surrounding areas.

Regarding the ring, I see two potential solutions. One option is grinding down the 45mm ring slightly to increase its size. There’s plenty of extra material available, so it seems doable. My only hesitation is choosing the right tool for the job—any advice? It’s made of stainless steel with a somewhat soft composition. The second option is building up the 50mm ring to stop my balls from slipping out. Perhaps some hobby-grade putty would work; I just need to check what’s on the market.

Fixing the tube bands is slightly more challenging because they are located on the interior of the tube. I gave it a go this morning with a Dremel, but maintaining the correct angle was tricky, and I suspect my current attachments aren’t ideal. Do you have recommendations for better tools here as well?

I previously wore that same cage before it went into semi-retirement. Like you, I had to customize mine too. You'll need a good quality handheld grinding/polishing tool similar to a Dremel. Be sure to pick up special mizzy wheels for the job. After that, get sanding drums in various grits so you can work from coarse to fine. Finally, polish any rough spots using a polishing compound along with what's known as a 'Muslin' wheel. Whether your ring is an ergonomic shape or perfectly round, use calipers to measure the inner diameter at several points to determine your exact starting size. Next, mount your mizzy wheel on the Dremel and begin grinding in a steady circular motion, aiming for symmetry. Once you hit your target dimension (for example, moving from 40mm up to 42mm), switch to your sanding drums. Start with the roughest grit and progress to the finest to smooth out the metal. Conclude by using the muslin wheel with polishing compound at high speed to remove remaining imperfections and achieve a bright shine. Lastly, wash it down with soap and water to check if all rough spots are gone. You can also grind down and smooth the tube bands without thinning the outer ring too much; you want it to remain comfortable. Shop around for the best deal; I did a quick search to give you an idea of what to look for. Make sure your Dremel is powerful enough and capable of high speeds, otherwise grinding will take forever and you won't get that desired polish. Don't skimp on the tool itself—more power is better. Feel free to PM me if you have questions; I'm a goldsmith by trade, so this is my daily routine.
