When my wife and I chose to order a bespoke cage back in September, the dynamics at home shifted as we figured out who held the reins. After an age of waiting, “the package” finally showed up. I was thrilled. Strapping on my gleaming new device, I marveled at its appearance, fit, and quality construction. A few days later, after wearing it intermittently, a couple of tweaks were needed. Off it went back to the post office.
Yesterday, both my wife and I took leave from our jobs since I was undergoing dental surgery. My healing is proceeding better than anticipated. But unexpectedly, my wife received some mail, and what do you think she held? It was that familiar red, white, and blue box containing my cage. She asked how I felt. Giving my usual “I’m doing fine” reply, she commanded with authority for me to put it back on.
As the new year nears, my wife believes many shifts are coming in our house. The days of being a free spirit seem numbered. With her pregnancy and first child on the way, she is establishing precedence regarding household roles.
We live in the North East, where snow appears occasionally. Guess who had to clear off her car this morning so she could head to work? We’ve discussed a roster of chores and punishments that she intends to implement. As things evolve, she’s learning how to manage our marriage more effectively—a role I used to hold. Seeing my increased productivity and the reduced burden on her makes her increasingly content. I retain plenty of personal time, provided I fulfill my duties first.
I believe we’ll both grow fond of these new roles over time. I’m still expected to act like a man, but she is now wearing the trousers.
