Chastity without a Dominant/submissive dynamic

We began incorporating chastity devices into our BDSM-style Dominant/submissive dynamic, but currently the D/s component has faded to nothing due to various health and other factors. Our relationship started from a strong long-term marriage; initially we were switches—taking on both Dom/Sub roles, or more precisely Top and bottom—and gradually moved toward a D/s structure over time. I know people arrive at chastity from different backgrounds, so I am curious how that difference shows up, especially for couples who view themselves as equals. Therefore, do you use your device while apart from the keyholder simply holding the key? In those cases, is there no Dominant/submissive element to your bond?
