I’m wondering if I truly require carrying an extra key. I have been wearing a PA device for six weeks and so far, no issues arise. I keep a spare in a tamper-evident case. This seems like a sensible precaution on the surface, yet it alters my experience. It would feel distinct without that option to exit whenever needed. I believe I am sacrificing some of that freedom for only a tiny boost in safety.

I am frequently with M who holds a key. When we are apart, I can often call her at home since I work there, and she tells me the location or combination for a spare stored inside. Most other situations I could handle easily enough. Yes, emergencies come to mind where having that key is necessary. In my first fifty years of life, however, those specific events haven’t actually happened (though they say the next half-century differs). For most cases, the device can be managed through means other than using a key.

But perhaps I am overlooking something. To gather real-world data and some interesting anecdotes - when have you found yourself using your spare? What was the reason? How long did it take to retrieve the key from its keeper? Could you have called them for directions to where it’s hidden? Did you manage through the incident without unlocking? Could the device itself survive the situation?
