Hello everyone. I wanted to share an update regarding how we sterilize the device, particularly since I am wearing a stainless steel urethral insert known as the Looker1.

Earlier on, I dealt with a prostate infection after keeping the Looker in for more than a week without taking it out or cleaning it.

I don’t think the issue was solely due to how long it went without removal and washing. However, I do suspect that before I put it in, the device wasn’t as clean—or truly sterile—as it ought to be.

Sure, I did wash it after every wearing session and sprayed it with bleach, assuming it was free of bacteria. But I was mistaken. After looking into it further, I realized sterilization isn’t quite as easy as just dipping it in bleach or boiling it for a few minutes.

Before we started leaving the Looker1 (with insert) on for 7 days straight, we used to take it out and clean it every night. For over three years that worked perfectly… wearing it continuously for a week was likely where the problem above came from, mostly because the device wasn’t sterilized enough before insertion, meaning the longer it stayed in, the higher the chance of bacteria taking hold.

So here is what I’ve found and our current method for keeping the device as clean as possible before inserting it into the urethra:

1. We use an ultrasonic cleaner with a detergent solution to loosen any solid deposits; we run this for 180 seconds.
2. Using pipe cleaners dipped in antiseptic hand gel, we clean the inside of the urethral tube.
3. Then sterilization is done using a household pressure cooker at 120°C for 60 minutes.

The device is now about 99%-100% sterile and ready to go into the penis, hopefully without any external bacteria or viruses attached. This means the only bacteria it will meet are from my own urine, which shouldn’t cause issues over a few days of wear.

Because of that earlier episode, we now take the device out every evening and soak it overnight in a 10% bleach solution. Since it has only been touching my urine/urethra during the day, the bleach should kill off any bacteria it encountered over those past 24-48 hours.

Once a week, we give the device a deep clean using the three steps above to keep third-party bacteria out of the urethra.

I hope this helps. If nothing else, I hope it makes you more aware of the risks involved with these devices and shows how we are lowering our infection risk when putting something into the penis.
