When I ordered my first custom device, I visited Home Depot to look at different metal rings for comparing a-ring and diameter sizes. The only option I could find was the 1/2” ring (sizes 1.5 and 2). It wasn’t perfect; looking back, I definitely could have sized down from what I actually ordered. I went with a 1 5/8” diameter.
After that, I ordered sizing rings from Mature Metal to help measure my Jailbird. Trying for a snug fit using their rings, the device ended up being quite tight in terms of diameter; I chose 1 3/8”.
I am a grower, and when I’m not aroused, there is plenty of extra skin folds.
Recently, I found this site. I don’t know if they still manufacture their devices, but I really liked how they measure diameter.
They basically cut a section from a toilet paper roll tube lengthwise and wrap it around the shaft until snug. Then you mark it with a pen and divide that measurement by 3.14 to get the diameter (I used a paper towel tube). When I tried this method, my result was 1.59”. This suggests I probably would have been better off in a 1 1/2” open design cage like the Jailbird.
My next device will definitely be closer to that measurement.
