There’s a weird pull inside me between wanting to hear all the little details about other people’s lives and knowing I shouldn’t really care. My goal is just to follow their story, not dictate how they live it out. Even with my strong curiosity, I stay pretty clueless regarding the private worlds of friends and acquaintances. I hold back on asking questions because I don’t want to seem too eager, so I usually dodge subjects that might reveal something personal. Looking back, it’s rather peculiar.
I was having a quick lunch with two mates who are married to one another. The wife in the pair was heading off for a week-long business trip and didn’t look very happy about it. I remarked, ‘Just don’t anger him, or he might change all the locks while you’re away.’ They both turned their heads instantly, fixing me with a brief stare. Then came some hesitant laughter before they shifted the topic. Later on, it hit me that not every lock is created equal; where I was thinking of house doors, my friends might have been picturing something else entirely.
It certainly made me pause and think. Eido
